The history of football in Qatar dates back to 1948, when it was first played by oil company workers living in the country.
Soon after the first permanent football teams were formed, and competitions were arranged. In 1950 Al Najah, the first football club in Qatar, was formed. The formation of other teams soon followed and the first tournament was played a year later, won by the host team, Dukhan.
Today, football is the most popular sport in Qatar, with more than 6,500 registered professional footballers.
There are four major competitions every season: the Sheikh Jassim Cup, followed by the Qatar Stars League, the Heir Apparent Cup and Emir of Qatar Cup.
When they win a tournament, as when the hosts won the 2006 Asian Games football gold medal, the entire country takes to the streets in celebration. Qataris are also passionate followers of international football and its stars.
The country has become a favourite destination for visiting teams' training camps and exhibition matches, ranging from youth competitions with strong Champions League participation, to major friendly matches.
